Therapy is a significant commitment of time and resources.  It works best when you find someone you can trust, and can devote energy to the change process.  Whether or not you been in psychotherapy before, you may have some questions about my approach or what to expect.  Deciding to enter therapy, and choosing someone to work with are big decisions.  I hope the following information will help with your decision.
Q:  Does a psychologist prescribe medication?
A: No, as a psychologist, I have a doctoral degree (PhD) and use talk therapy techniques.  Psychiatrists have a medical degree (M.D.) and prescribe medication.  Psychologists receive 6-8 years of post-graduate training in a scientist-practitioner model in research methods, treatment and assessment.
Q:  What types of therapy does Dr. Heard practice?
A:  I tailor the treatment to each individual and couple, working to help solve problems and develop skills that will allow you to meet your goals.  My practice includes treatments that have been shown to be helpful through research.  These include Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and Gottman-style Couple Therapy.  Findings from the fields of attachment and  interpersonal neurobiology inform my work, and I frequently use training in Mindfulness and Relaxation techniques to help manage physical reactions to stress, anxiety and illness. 
Q:  Will Insurance cover my therapy?
A:  As a Licensed Clinical Psychologist, my services may be eligible for reimbursement by insurance companies or your flexible spending account, based on the guidelines they have established.  As an out-of-network provider, payment is made at the time services are rendered, and I will provide a receipt that has all of the information, including diagnosis, that you would need to file with your insurance for payment.  Please contact your insurance company for information about your benefits and possible exclusions.  Here are some helpful questions to ask:
  • Do I have mental health (or behavioral health) benefits?
  • Do I have out-of-network benefits?
  • What is my deductible (and has it been met)?
  • How many sessions am I allowed per year?
  • How much will I be reimbursed for each visit?
  • Do I need a referral or pre-approval for treatment?
